Most people prefer DIY style for their bathroom renovation. Bathroom renovation DIY is a good option if you enjoy learning new things, have patience and willing to get your hands dirty. This is also a cost effective method to beautify your bathroom.
Should you DIY?
Bathroom renovation DIY is definitely a cost saving and a satisfying process, but should you DIY? Most people DIY project management, color selection, demolition and remove and repair most fittings like hooks and towel rails. However, if plumbing or electrical jobs are involved you need to get professional help, unless you are very skilled.
Planning a bathroom renovation DIY
You need to first decide if your bathroom needs a full redesign or just a makeover. You can have a spacious bathroom if you plan and design the process of bathroom renovation DIY well. You can work this out with the help of computer software, or if you have a major renovation plan you can hire a professional.
If the layout and water proofing system is fine, you can renovate your bathroom by changing the color scheme, replacing cabinets and retiling. You cannot however do a major plumbing or electrical jobs in bathroom renovation DIY, as this is not permissible legally.
This depends on the bathroom renovation DIY plan. You would need a permit if you are planning to reconstruct your bathroom from a scratch.
Bathroom renovation DIY costs
The cost generally varies a lot depending upon the work. Bathroom renovation DIY would definitely work out cheaper by a few thousand dollars, but it needs some skill, time and motivation.
When you consider bathroom renovation, DIY (do it yourself) is an attractive option just because of the costs involved. When you think of bathroom renovation DIY projects that you can do, all plumbing and electrical work should NEVER come to mind. If you plan out your bathroom renovation project in advance, you’ll have enough time to get a few estimates from plumbers or electricians. Although you can’t touch the lighting or the plumbing yourself, that still leaves you with a lot you can do for bathroom renovation DIY projects. Remember with any bathroom renovation DIY project that you have vertical as well as horizontal space to express your creativity. Even “relaxing place” could be a theme you can build your bathroom renovation DIY projects around, with dark curtains, soft light bulbs, pale, gentle colors and a shelf to put a little rock garden or a bowl or potpourri on.
The beauty of bathroom renovation DIY projects is that you do not have to stick to a schedule.
This is a great and informative post. The video was a good watch too. I’m planning to remodel my bathroom soon, and i’m just trying to find tips on it.
I love the look and feel of that bathroom. Its like a 5 start hotel bathroom at home.
Thanks for sharing the Phillipe Stark video – well worth the watch
The above post is good, one thing I wanted to note is that one job that many DIYers would be capable of is tiling and this can be one of the expensive jobs in the bathroom depending upon the amount involved. Whilst I understand some DIYers may not be good enough to tile themselves many would indeed be.
As a hint I’d say get the right tools, they make all the difference, you can usually hire a good cutter.
I’d also add a comment about bringing an element of ‘green design’ into your bathroom remodel. The installation of a low flush or dual flush toilet or a low flow showerhead can save water (bringing environmental benefits) and may help to reduce utility bills too.

These bathrooms look superb. I personally would not DIY as it’s my cleaning place I like it to be nicely done and clean cut and I don’t think I could achieve that without lots of hard work an time. So getting a pro is my choice.
