Energy Efficient Bathroom Tips

If we were able to break down our energy bill each month we’d find that the majority of our money is spent on the bathroom, the hardest working room in our home. Water is constantly being pumped through sink faucets, showerheads, tub fixtures, and our toilet while we rejuvenate ourselves at all hours during the day. Now that we know which room we’re supporting the most, it’s a great opportunity to consider energy efficient options for bath and light fixtures so that we won’t have to cringe so much the next time we’re greeted with our monthly energy bill.

  1. Fluorescent Lighting – There aren’t too many areas in our lives where we want a bright light shining down on us except in our bathroom. Between all of the cleaning, hair drying, primping, and pruning, it’s essential to depend on our light fixtures to see clearly and have ourselves looking our absolute best. When we flick on the lights, why not cut down on the watts we kill by substituting our fixtures with fluorescent bulbs? On average, Energy Star CFLs use 75% less energy and live up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs come in a variety of sizes and shapes to fit nearly every bathroom vanity light strip, shower enclosure, wall sconce, or bathroom fan.

Energy Star Advanced Lighting Package (ALP) ensures that homes include at least 60% Energy Star qualified light fixtures.
  2. Toto Toilet – When it comes to water conservation in the bathroom, Toto low consumption toilets are your very best bet. Both Ultimate and Ultramax collections use 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) and are designed with a 2 1/8” wide trap way to ensure that one flush is all you need after each use. Standard toilet models use 1.8gpf which can certainly add up over time. Toto couples less water with a powerful flush to prevent toilet clogs and double flushing.

  3. Energy Star Rated Bath Fan – Once we are motivated to revamp our bathroom into an eco-friendly room, there are two important words to always remember: Energy Star. An energy efficient bathroom goes hand in hand with Energy Star rated products as they ensure that homeowners are using an average of 70-75% less energy than standard bathroom furniture models. Consider a bathroom fan installed with a light in order to give your space an energy efficient lighting option during hot showers and baths. High quality bath fans serve a number of positive roles in your home as they control moisture in the air, prevent bathroom molding, and provide a healthy environment.
